Sumatra Lintong
$13.50

A full 12 oz / 340 gram bag.

The dry fragrance has intense chocolate and caramel biscuit tones, with molasses, chocolate-coated raisin and dark berry. Sugar-browning notes like butterscotch, caramel and spice are present in the wet aroma, with some plum and blackberry fruits. The cup has a great rustic sweetness, with Concord grape notes, molasses, cinnamon stick, black tea, fresh tobacco, and strong mulling spice in the finish. Light roasts have a more malty roast taste, fading to chocolate with plum/prune fruit. Darker roast levels have dark malt syrup, and a thick slab of fruited/chocolate flavor. This coffee has a body that is nicely weighted like apple juice. Makes a good single-origin espresso.

Treasure Island Espresso
$14.75

A full 12 oz / 340 gram bag.

Treasure Island Espresso is one of HelioRoast’s rare pre-roast blends, designed especially for espresso and espresso-based drinks. Its intense bittersweet is borne by a very full body, and together they hold their own with any milk product. Don’t expect complexity here: we’ve tailored this mix to be roasted dark and drunk when still hot. Mid-range temperatures accentuate the sourness that is characteristic of the Robusta beans in the blend, which also give it a fine crema. Much of the aftertaste fades quickly but the remainder resides smoothly and pleasantly in the mouth and throat.

Kivu is a super star Rwanda with all the top notes you hope for in a highlight coffee. City+ roasts are complex, showing a sweetness that is like raw cane juice. As the cup cools, mellow citrus notes fill out the profile, lemon oil, orange tea, all reminiscent of lemon-mandarin rice candies. Cinnamon stick, clove, and all-spice notes arise in both light and more developed roasts, and you can expect mouth-cleansing acidity throughout. Full City brings chocolate roast tones to the profile. The middle roast ranges make for a standout pour-over brew, and Full City produces one of the best African espressos of the year.

For our Smell the Coffee! series, produced by our friend John Duhring, we ask AI to ask Nelson Mandela below how he might have enjoyed Rwanda Kivu (just a bit north of his home in South Africa!) with some happy and energetic dancers. If you find yourself dancing while sipping this espresso, take a peek at us: we are too!

Storing and Grinding Your Coffee

On average, roasted coffees taste noticeably stale between 12-14 days after roasting. It’s even worse for grinding: 11 minutes! Grinding beans vastly increases the number of flavor-bearing surfaces, and hence oxidation. This is why you should always grind your own beans, and as close as possible to your brewing time.

Confused about the dizzying galaxy of grinders, or what to do with your beans post-purchase? Here we’ll take a quick tour of the topic.

Learn More About Roast Levels

Coffee-roasting levels are notoriously vague and slippery. One person's "medium blond" is another's "medium dark." What's a poor roaster to do?

Well, one thing is to use standard roasting language and categories, which for some reason roasters seem hesitant to do. So that's what you'll find in this guide, along with their associated temperatures. Once you identify what you believe is your usual preference, order it using our drop-down menu on a product page. If it's not exactly what you want, revise it the next time.
